Grand National - odds on cruelty

The Grand National brings shame on Britain as a nation of 'animal lovers' - since 1997, the three day meet at Aintree has claimed the lives of 30 horses.

Runners face unique problems at Liverpool's Aintree racecourse, including the proximity of a large, noisy crowd; the number of animals taking part; and the nature of the fences. Most years there are fatalities. Animal Aid designates the week running up to the Grand National as Horse Racing Awareness Week.
