Dear Commissioner Wallstrom

As a European taxpayer, I am outraged to hear of proposals for a massive chemical testing programme that could involve the death of up to 10 million animals.

Research has repeatedly shown that results from animal toxicity tests cannot be reliably applied to humans. Expert scientists have found in vitro methods to be more relevant, reliable and cost-effective than animal studies. With this information already at the Commissions disposal it seems ludicrous that such proposals are still under consideration.

Even the European chemicals testing industry have condemned the Commission's plans because they would require 'enormous resourcing, both in manpower and costs and require a very high and unacceptable number of animals to complete the testing regimens'. (CEFIC briefing, 3 June 2000).

In light of the potential animal suffering, and the Commission's prior commitment to reducing the number of animals used in experiments, I urge you to reconsider implementing this futile and wasteful EU chemical testing programme.
